UHS Centennial and HUGHP Silver Anniversary to be
Marked by Special Events
University Health Services (UHS) will mark its centennial while the Harvard
University Group Health Program (HUGHP) will celebrate its Silver Anniversary
with events on Nov. 19 and 20.
A symposium marking the occasions will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, at
the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 136 Irving St., Cambridge. Opening
remarks will be delivered by David S. Rosenthal, director of UHS.
The topics and speakers for the symposium include "Mind/Body Medicine:
The Power and Biology of Belief," Herbert Benson, chief of the Division
of Behavioral Medicine, New England Deaconess Hospital; Topic to be Announced,
Mark L. Rosenberg, director of the National Center for Injury Prevention
and Control, Centers for Disease Control; and "The Century of the Cigarette:
Prevention, Risk, and Responsibility in American Culture," Allan Brandt,
professor of the history of science and the Amalie Moses Kass Professor
of the History of Medicine at the Medical School.
During the afternoon, topics and speakers include "Women's Health:
Past, Present, and Future," Susan J. Blumenthal, assistant surgeon
general and rear admiral, and senior science adviser, U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services; and Topic to be Announced, David Rosenthal,
A dinner at the Charles Hotel will be held in the evening.
Opening remarks will be given by President Neil L. Rudenstine. Lloyd
J. Kolbe, founding director of the Division of Adolescent and School Health
for the National Center for Chronic Disease Control and Prevention, will
be the guest speaker.
On Nov. 20, tours of UHS will be given.
The symposium is free to University students if they preregister. Otherwise,
there is a charge of $5 for students at the door. Admission for others who
