Learning from Performers to Host Whoopi Goldberg Visit

Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg will be a special guest of Harvard University on Monday, Nov. 9.

During her visit, which is cosponsored by the Learning From Performers program (in the Office for the Arts) and the Amy Smith Berylson Lecture (in the Harvard College Women's Initiative, Office of the Dean of Harvard College), Goldberg will participate in an informal question-and-answer session at Sanders Theatre at 3 p.m. The event is open to Harvard-Radcliffe students, faculty, and staff only. Free tickets are available by lottery; sign-up will be held on Friday, Oct. 30, and Monday, Nov. 2, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at both the Office for the Arts, 74 Mt. Auburn St., and University Hall, Harvard Yard. Only one ticket will be issued per person, and a Harvard ID is required for sign-up and admission. Results will be posted on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 5 and 6, at the sign-up sites. Tickets may be picked up at the Sanders Theatre box office only from noon to 6 p.m. on Nov. 5 and 6. Whoopi Goldberg's performance as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost -- the highest-grossing movie of 1990 -- earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the Golden Globe Award, the NAACP Image Award, and the British Academy Award. For 1985's The Color Purple, her debut film, she was nominated for an Academy Award and earned a Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award. Her film credits includeJumpin' Jack Flash, Burglar, Fatal Beauty, Clara's Heart, The Long Walk Home, Soapdish, Sister Act, Sarafina!, Corrina, Corrina, The Player, Boys on the Side, and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

Goldberg is well-known for her tireless humanitarian efforts on behalf of children, the homeless, human rights, the battle against AIDS, and many other causes and charities.

The Amy Smith Berylson '75 lecture is an annual event and part of the Harvard College Women's Initiative.
