Former CFIA Fellow Named Peace Prize Winner

Described by the Nobel committee as "the clearest and most consistent of Northern Ireland's political leaders in his work for a peaceful solution," John Hume, the leader of Northern Ireland's Social Democratic and Labor Party, was announced last week as a co-winner with David Trimble of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize. Hume was an associate fellow of the Center for International Affairs -- now the Weatherhead Center -- in the fall term of 1976. Hume has been working for decades to bring about an enduring peace for Northern Ireland.

Eight Elected to Institute of Medicine

Eight researchers from the Medical School were elected this week to the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences which provides advice to Congress. They include Dennis Ausiello, Jackson Professor of Clinical Medicine and head of the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital; David Blumenthal, associate professor of health care policy and of medicine; Victor Dzau, Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic and head of the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH); Laurie Glimcher, professor of medicine and Irene Heinz Given Professor of Immunology at the School of Public Health; Ronald Kessler, professor of health care policy; Eva Neer, professor of medicine; Thomas Stossel, professor of medicine and director of the Division of Experimental Medicine at BWH; and Walter Willett, professor of medicine and Fredrick Stare Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at the School of Public Health.

Gomes Named 'Clergy of the Year'

The Rev. Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church, was named the Earle B. Pleasant Clergy of the Year by Religion in American Life (RIAL). Gomes was presented with an inscribed crystal chalice on Oct. 15 at the American Bible Society in New York City.

Gomes was also RIAL's 1998 Raymond J. Peterson Lecturer and gave an address to board members and guests titled "Private Faith and Public Responsibility." An American Baptist minister, Gomes is the author of four volumes of sermons and The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart. Gomes has preached and lectured throughout North America and the British Isles, and participated in the inaugurations of President Reagan and President Bush.

RIAL, based in Princeton, N.J., is an organization that works nationally to strengthen congregations of all faiths.
