Legal Aid Bureau, Clinical Legal Ed. Mark Anniversaries

Former American Bar Association President Robert MacCrate, Law School Class of '48, and former Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Deval Patrick, Class of '82, will return to the Law School on Saturday, Oct. 24, to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of Clinical Legal Education at Harvard and the 85th anniversary of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau.

MacCrate and Patrick will be participating in a commemorative panel entitled "Bridging the Gap Between the Academy and the Bar: Clinical Legal Education in the 21st Century." The panel will take place in Ames Courtroom, Austin Hall, 1515 Massachusetts Ave., at 2:30 p.m. and will be followed by receptions to coincide with Alumni Reunion Weekend at the Law School.

MacCrate is senior counsel to Sullivan & Cromwell and a former president of the American Bar Association (ABA) and the New York State Bar Association. He chaired the ABA Task Force that authored 1992's "Legal Education and Professional Development -- An Educational Continuum" (commonly referred to as the MacCrate Report).

Patrick is partner in the trial section of Day, Berry & Howard and former assistant attorney general for civil rights under President Clinton. He is a past president of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau and has served on the Executive Committee of the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund. He was recently elected to the Harvard Board of Overseers.

MacCrate and Patrick will be joined by Gary Bellow '60, founding Faculty Director of the Clinical Program; Professor Charles J. Ogletree, Jr. '78, current Faculty Director of the Clinical Program; and Lecturer on Law Jeanne Charn '70, Director of the Hale and Dorr Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School, the Clinical Program's largest clinic. Other Law School alumni participating in the panel include Russell Engler '83, Tobey Oxholm '79, Mark Rosenbaum '74, Ann Shalleck '78, and Melody Webb '93.
