President, provost to hold office hours for students
President Neil L. Rudenstine will hold office hours for students in his
Massachusetts Hall office on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 4-5 p.m. Provost Harvey
Fineberg will hold office hours for students in his Massachusetts Hall office
on Thursday, Oct. 1, 4-5 p.m. Office hours are held on a first-come, first-served
basis.
Affirmative Action celebrated at Medical Area campus
A celebration of 30 years of Affirmative Action at the Medical School
and the School of Dental Medicine will begin this fall with a series of
programs. The first event, "A Recommitment to Diversity at HMS/HSDM,"
will take place on Friday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be an opening
reception from 4 to 4:30 in the MEC Atrium, followed by presentations in
the MEC Amphitheatre by President Neil L. Rudenstine, Medical School Dean
Joseph Martin, and Donnella Green (MD/Ph.D. candidate/HMS '99). The public
is welcome to attend.
Museum changes its name
The Museum of Cultural & Natural History has changed its name to
the Harvard Museum of Natural History. The Museum is comprised of the University's
three natural history institutions: the Botanical Museum, the Museum of
Comparative Zoology, and the Mineralogical & Geological Museum. For
information about the Museum, call 495-3045.
Directory of faculty, professional, and administrative staff available
The 1998-99 Directory of Faculty, Professional and Administrative
Staff will be mailed directly to Teaching Faculty and all Administrative
and Professional Staff, as well as all Emeriti of the University
starting in late November. If you do not fall under any of the above categories
and need a copy, please send your written request to Information Management
Services, Holyoke Center 639, Attn.: Directory Order; or fax (495-0767).
The following information is required: Name, University ID no., Office Address,
and Telephone Extension. Requests cannot be accepted without this information.
Changes of Address, Name, or Title should be directed to the Payroll Office,
359 Holyoke Center. Name, University ID no., both the old and new addresses
must be provided.
Milton Fund offers grants
The bequest of William F. Milton makes research funds available to faculty
members of the University. The Milton Fund supports studies of a medical,
geographical, historical, or scientific nature, which must be either in
the interests of promoting the physical and material welfare of the human
race or of investigating and determining the value and importance of a discovery
or invention. The amount of the award is $24,000 and is given between Jan.
1, 1999, and Dec. 31, 1999.
Applicants must be members of the University with voting privileges in
their respective faculties and must not have received Milton Fund support
during the last five years. Preference is given to new and original projects,
especially independent work of recently appointed young faculty members.
A formal application form is required and is available from Sponsored
Programs Administration and the deadline is Oct. 15, 1998. Please contact
