Graduate School of Arts and Sciences wins award for Career Options Day

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) has been awarded the Seal of Excellence for its model alumni program in career assistance from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The program is a collaborative annual venture among the Graduate School, the Office of Career Services, and the Graduate School Alumni Association. It has been organized by Margaret Newhouse, assistant director of the Office of Career Services; alumnus Sidney Spielvogel, AM '46, economics, MBA '49; and Paula Szocik, director of GSAS publications and alumni relations.

Career Options Day gives current GSAS students the opportunity to hear from approximately 30 GSAS alumni who have succeeded in diverse professions outside of university teaching and research. Panels of alumni in related fields speak about their career paths, offer practical advice, and spend time informally networking with individual students. The more than 100 students who attend each year have received new information and encouragement; the alumni participants have found gratification in giving back to current students and reconnecting with GSAS.

The Alumni Relations category of the Circle of Excellence competition was open to the entire CASE membership of more than 3,000 institutions. In reviewing entries, the judges looked for programs that can be used as models for other associations and be incorporated into the CASE's core curriculum.
