Education School Faculty Reap Honors

This past spring, Education Professor Howard Gardner was made Doctor of Philosophy, honoris causa, by Tel Aviv University as part of its celebration of the 50th anniversary of the State of Israel.

Gardner also was awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters during Princeton University's 251st Commencement exercises "in honor of his work on multiple intelligences," which has "revolutionized education from day care to graduate school throughout the world." Gardner attended both commencement ceremonies.

And at Academic Homecoming ceremonies at Teachers College, Columbia University, this spring, Jerome T. Murphy, professor and Dean of the Graduate School of Education, was presented with the Teachers College 1998 Distinguished Alumni Award, while Carol Gilligan, the Patricia Albjerg Graham Professor of Gender Studies, was awarded the TC Medal, Teachers College's own version of the traditional honorary degree.

F.M. Cross Receives Honorary Degree from UPenn.

Frank Moore Cross, Hancock Professor of Hebrew and Other Oriental Languages Emeritus, of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, received a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, from the University of Pennsylvania at its May Commencement.

Ziegler Named Surgeon-In-Chief, Chief of Surgery at Children's Hospital

Moritz M. Ziegler joined Children's Hospital as its new surgeon-in-chief and chief of the Department of Surgery last month. Since 1989, Ziegler has been surgeon-in-chief and director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati. He was also a professor of pediatrics and surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Ziegler is a pediatric surgeon with special interests in transplantation and oncologic surgery, as well as in nutrition support for surgical patients. Ziegler will oversee all surgical programs at Children's. Along with surgical department chiefs, medical staff leaders, and hospital administration, Ziegler will develop plans for integrating clinical care, training and research, as well as participate in overall hospital strategic planning.
