Graham Receives Honorary Doctorate from Tulane

Ian Graham, associate of Maya Corpus Program at the Peabody Museum, was awarded an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters from Tulane University. The doctorate was awarded in recognition of Graham's work, The Corpus of Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions, published by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.

Scarry Receives Award From Chatham College

Elaine Scarry, the Walter M. Cabot Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value, and professor of English and American literature, has received the 1998 Cornerstone Award from her alma mater, Chatham College. The award is given in recognition of the achievements and leadership of Chatham alumnae who demonstrate the essence of a Chatham College education as well as the ideals of a liberal arts education. Scarry was honored specifically for her achievements in education, and received the award on Saturday, May 23, during Chatham's reunion and commencement week.

Center for Jewish Studies Names Award Recipients

David Lambert '98, of Winthrop House, has won the Norman Podhoretz Prize in Jewish Studies. The $2,000 award is given to the student who submits the best essay, feature article, or short story on a Jewish theme. The prize is sponsored by the Ernest H. Weiner Fund at the American Jewish Committee.

Tamar Katz '01 and Bradley Nash '99, of Pforzheimer House, share the 1998 Wolf Lewkowitz Prize, given to the student of Yiddish studies who "shows the greatest promise in the study of Yiddish language, literature, and/or history." The prize is a gift from Marshall and Myra Zissman in memory of their granduncle.

Bureau of Study Counsel Gives Barrett Awards

Susy Shu-Hsin Jeng '98, Sean Lyndersay '99, and Julia Sobol '98 have been named Joseph L. Barrett Award recipients for 1997-98. Administered by the Bureau of Study Counsel, the Barrett Award is given to those students who have enhanced the learning of others, with the vigor and openness characteristic of Joe Barrett '73. Both Jeng and Sobol have been tutors for the Bureau, while Lyndersay participated in updating the technology of the long-running course in reading and study strategies.
