Faculty Council

At its eighteenth and final meeting of the year, the Faculty Council met with the directors of the Kathryn W. and Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Russian Studies, the John King Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, and the Whitehead Center for International Affairs -- Professors Timothy J. Colton (Government), Ezra F. Vogel (Sociology), and Jorge Dominguez (Government), respectively. The Council was interested in the rationale for the Faculty's centers, the relationship of the centers (in both the humanities and the social sciences) to the departments (and to the Faculty as a whole), the responsibilities of centers for students and teaching, and the oversight and management mechanisms of the centers.

The Council also discussed a memorandum on "The Endowment, the Stock Market, and the Faculty's Financial Situation." Finally, the Council reviewed several topics remaining on its agenda which might be carried forward to next year.
