Concert to be presented in memory of Tcherepnin

The students of Music 167 (Digital Electronic Music Composition) will perform their final projects in a concert held in memory of the late Professor Ivan Tcherepnin on Thursday, May 14. The concert will involve live performance as well as electronic components and audience interactivity.

The free event takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Paine Hall.

City of Cambridge to promote commuting

The city of Cambridge has announced that Tuesday, May 19, will be "Commute A Better Way Day," an event promoting the use of alternatives to driving, such as walking, cycling, public transit, and ridesharing (carpooling and vanpooling). The event is timed to coincide with a number of national transportation events, including National Bike Month, National Transportation Week, Try Transit Week, and Bike to Work Day, as well as the local Boston Bike Week. All encourage reduction in traffic congestion and air pollution.

A public information fair will be held at Cambridge City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Ave., between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., with representatives from the MBTA, CARAVAN for Commuter, and the Cambridge Police. Special events will include prize giveaways, a walking tour of Central Square, and bike tune-ups. For further information, contact Joseph Barr at 349-4671.

Dudley House presents International Dance Festival

International Dance Festival II, a music and dance exhibition from around the world, will take place at Dudley House on Thursday, May 14, and will begin with a reception at 8 p.m. followed by the festival, at 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

CfA hosts free observatory night on quasars

A free astronomy program will be held Thursday, May 21, on "Quasars: Cosmic Blast Furnaces." The program, sponsored by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), features a nontechnical lecture, a short film or video, and telescopic observing, weather permitting. Jonathan McDowell of the CfA is the presenter.

The event will be held in the Phillips Auditorium, Center for Astrophysics, 60 Garden St., Cambridge. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the program begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free. For further information, call 495-7461 or 495-7372.

HIID offers program on climate change and development

The Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) will offer a new Executive Program on Climate Change & Development July 6-17. The program will address the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions without limiting economic growth in developing countries and is designed for diplomats, policymakers, business executives, and nongovernmental organization leaders from around the globe.
