Women In the Ivy League
Yearlong celebration to mark 25 years of Ivy championship play
It's time to celebrate a milestone in women's athletics and the Harvard-Radcliffe
community has plenty to be proud of.
This month's women's Eastern Sprints Regatta will kick off the Ivy League's
yearlong celebration of the Silver Anniversary of Ivy League women's athletic
championship competition -- the longest such tradition in American sports.
Radcliffe's heavyweight crew won the 1974 Eastern Sprints title, which
is considered the League's first championship event for women. Radcliffe
captured the title again in 1975, 1987, and 1989. The Radcliffe lightweights
have won nine Eastern titles overall, including crowns in 1996 and 1997.
The 25th Anniversary commemoration will include events at all eight Ivy
institutions, ending with a May 1999 symposium and dinner in New York City,
honoring prominent Ivy alumnae from across the country for their athletic
and career achievements.
In conjunction with the yearlong Ivy League Silver Anniversary Celebration,
Harvard's Department of Athletics will host a special event on Sept. 26,
1998, commemorating 25 years of athletic achievements by Harvard women in
the Ivy League.
Harvard's Silver Anniversary Celebration will kick off on Friday, Sept.
25, 1998, with an evening reception at Weld Boathouse. Saturday's festivities
will be highlighted by panel discussions relating to women's athletic issues;
an informal career workshop during lunch; athletic competition by the women's
field hockey, soccer, and volleyball teams; and a banquet to honor the Silver
Anniversary Team. The celebration will conclude on Sunday with alumnae games
and lunch.
