Harvard Students, Staff Receive Awards for Race
Relation Efforts
The Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations honored 38
undergraduates for their contributions to interracial understanding and
cultural awareness at the University at an award dinner held Thursday, April
23.
The dinner honored the memory of David Aloian, who served as Master of
Quincy House and executive director of the Harvard Alumni Association during
his tenure at Harvard. Aloian and his wife, Mimi, were early supporters
of the goals and endeavors of the Harvard Foundation. The dinner is cosponsored
annually by Michael Shinagel, Master of Quincy House and Dean of the Extension
School.
Two students, Nana Coleman '98 and Sarita James '98, nominated by the
director of the Foundation, the Dean of Harvard College, and their House
Masters, received the Harvard Foundation Director's medal for their outstanding
leadership and contributions to the improvement of race relations and intercultural
life of the University.
Other students receiving awards were Phillip Atiba Goff '99, Dionne Andrea
Fraser '99, Mustafa Mohsin Siddiqui '99, Stacye Lynette Baker '98, Mark
Alexander Price '98, Lamelle Daile Rawlins '99, Nanaho Sawano '98, Salvatore
Gogliormella '98, Rosanna Antonia Orfield '98, Isaac Robert Simon Hodes
'99, Thomas Zabuna Lukoma '98, Derrick Nana-Abaka Ashong '97, Alfred Fraijo
'99, Daniel Hayden Stephens '98, Jason Daniel Williamson '98, Shatema Annice
Threadcraft '99, Belinda Julie McIntosh '99, Jennifer Lee '98-99, Allison
S. Feaster '98, and Nicola Alexandra McKinney '99.
The awards were presented by Dr. S. Allen Counter, director of the Harvard
Foundation; Shinagel; and David L. Evans, senior admissions officer for
Harvard-Radcliffe and member of the Harvard Foundation Advisory Committee.
A number of students received Honorable Mention for their work on the
Cultural Rhythms Festival. They are: Caolionn O'Connell '00, Brian Anderson
'00, Mahmood Firouzbakht '98-99, Nancy Lin '99, Sukanya Lahiri '00, Kamil
Redmond '00, Brian Howard '00, Brian Daigle '00, Marwah Abdalla '00, Sergio
Castellon '00, Macarena Correa '00, Weston Eguchi '99, Shin Lin '99, Mohamad
Al-Ississ '99, Anita Wong '99, and Devi SenGupta '98.
This year's recipient of the faculty/staff award for notable
contributions in the area of race relations was Dean William R.
Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid. The faculty/staff
award, which is voted by the students of the Harvard Foundation, and signed
by President Neil L. Rudenstine and Dean of Harvard College Harry Lewis,
recognized Fitzsimmons for "his commendable efforts to increase diversity
in college admission, and to acknowledge his notable contributions to intercultural
and race relations."
