The 1998 Eastern Regional Conference of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association is meeting in Boston this week, and Harvard's Rory Browne will be on hand to speak.

Browne, who is a lecturer on history and literature as well as associate secretary to the University, is also a zoo enthusiast and trustee of Zoo New England. He will give a talk on Thursday morning titled "Of Bears, Belugas, and Brahmins: The Historic Relations and Future Missions of Zoos and Aquaria."

Presentation and workshop topics include animal care and husbandry, wildlife conservation and education, exhibits, marketing, membership, development, and operations.

The conference will also include the national meeting of the taxon advisory group (TAG), which manages captive populations of great apes and New World primates, such as gorillas, gibbons, orangutans, bonobos, and chimpanzees.

Other speakers are Brian Rutledge, president/CEO of Zoo New England, and Henry Kendall, Nobel laureate from M.I.T.

The conference opened yesterday and ends April 26 at the Colonnade Hotel, 120 Huntington Ave., Boston. For registration and information, call 973-0215.
