Doerschuk Wins Award in Clinical Science

Claire Doerschuk, associate professor of pathology at the Medical School, has been awarded the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research.

The $750,000 grant, for research titled "The Response of Neutrophils During Inflammatory Lung Disease," will enable Doerschuk to focus on studying pneumonia and the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

A faculty member since 1995, Doerschuk is currently the Mark and Catherine Winkler Associate Professor of Physiology and Cell Biology at the School of Public Health.

Ackerman Presented with Lifetime Achievement Award

James S. Ackerman, Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor of Fine Arts Emeritus, has been awarded the Paul Oskar Kristeller Lifetime Achievement Award for excellent achievement in Renaissance studies.

The award was presented on March 28 by the Renaissance Society of America during a portion of their annual meeting at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Women in Technology Award Reception and Forum To Be Held

The Fourth Annual Women in Technology Mini-Conference and the Harvard Education Forum will be sponsoring an award reception and forum at the Graduate School of Education to honor women in technology. The event will be held in the Gutman Conference Center on Thursday, April 9, at 7 p.m.

Peggy Charren, founder of Action for Children's Television, is the recipient of this year's Women in Technology Leadership Award. Following the reception, there will be a discussion titled "Starting Young: Girls and Women In Technology." Earlier in the day, Charren will moderate a conversation titled "The Future of Children's Television Programming: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" (5:30 p.m., Askwith Lecture Hall).

Howe Appointed to Board of Schools Foundation

Harold "Doc" Howe II, senior lecturer emeritus at the Graduate School of Education, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Foundation for Excellent Schools (FES), a nonprofit organization based in Middlebury, Vt. Since 1991, FES has helped develop relationships among educators, students, parents, and local business to help public schools improve student performance.
