Alex Krieger Appointed Chair of Urban Planning and Design at GSD

Alex Krieger, professor in practice of urban design, has been appointed chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the Graduate School of Design (GSD). His appointment becomes effective July 1.

"I very much look forward to working with Professor Krieger in this new capacity," said GSD Dean Peter G. Rowe. "We are fortunate to have this outstanding design practitioner and academic on our faculty."

Krieger currently serves as the program director of the Master of Architecture in Urban Design/Master of Landscape Architecture in Urban Design programs. A member of the faculty since 1984, he originally served as associate professor of architecture and urban design. In 1989, he was appointed adjunct professor of architecture and urban design and was promoted to professor in practice of urban design in 1993.

In addition to his involvement with the GSD, Krieger was one of the founding members of the Boston Civic Design Commission and is a founding principal of Chan Krieger & Associates in Cambridge, Mass. The firm's work has received numerous prizes in national competitions, as well as Progressive Architecture and AIA awards. An author of five monographs, including "Design Primer for Towns and Cities" as well as "Towns and Town Making Principles," Krieger serves as the director of the National Endowment for the Arts' Mayors Institute on City Design, as an architect for the Providence Capital Center Commission design review, and is an adviser to the Boston Redevelopment Authority on various downtown planning and design projects.

Krieger's master plan for the Central Artery corridor was one of 18 projects in the Urban Revisions exhibition organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, which recently returned from a two-year tour of North American museums. He is currently developing master plans for areas of downtown Cleveland, Cincinnati, Des Moines, and Providence, as well as Boston's Seaport District and City Hall Plaza.

Krieger succeeds François Vigier as chair. Rowe recognized Vigier "for his outstanding leadership and service to the school during his tenure as chairman, and especially for his success in bringing the planning program back to the GSD."
