Novartis-Drew Biomedical Awards Go To Two Faculty

Two of this year's three Novartis-Drew Awards for Biomedical Science were given to two Harvard faculty, Alfred L. Goldberg, professor of cell biology, and Thomas Maniatis, professor of molecular and cellular biology.

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. was recently formed by the merging of Sandoz and Ciba-Geigy pharmaceutical companies.

Past Harvard recipients include Howard Goodman, Seymour Kety, Ronald Khan, Philip Leder, Stuart Schlossman, Stuart Schreiber, and Jack Strominger.

Chi-Yuan Hsu Named AKF Clinical Scientist in Nephrology

Chi-yuan Hsu, clinical fellow in medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, has won the 1998 Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Fellowship by the American Kidney Fund. During his fellowship he will conduct a study of risk factors for chronic renal insufficiency and will complete an M.S. degree in clinical epidemiology at the School of Public Health. He is a graduate of the Medical School.

The purpose of the AKF fellowship is to encourage promising young nephrologists to pursue careers in academic medicine. AKF Clinical Scholars receive advanced education in public health while they conduct prevention and outcomes research.

Daedalus Publishes Work by Faculty Members

The work of a number of faculty members will appear in the 40th anniversary issue of Daedalus, the quarterly journal of the Cambridge-based American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The issue, "Science and Culture," brings together scientists and humanists together in an exploration of how science and culture have changed in this "tumultuous" century.

The faculty and their journal articles are: Gerald Holton ("Einstein and the Cultural Roots of Modern Science"), E.O. Wilson ("Consilience Among the Great Branches of Learning"), Peter Galison ("The Americanization of Unity"), James Ackerman ("Leonardo da Vinci: Art in Science"), Patricia A. Graham ("Educational Dilemmas for Americans"), Bretislav Friedrich and Dudley Herschbach ("Space Quantization: Otto Stern's Lucky Star"), and Steven Weinberg ("Physics and History").
