Jeffrey Horrell Appointed Associate Librarian for Collections

Jeffrey Horrell, librarian of the Fine Arts Library since 1992, has been appointed associate librarian for collections in the Harvard College Library.

In his new position, Horrell will share in the overall administration of the College Library, with primary responsibility for leadership and administration of the programs relating to the development and management of the collections, including aspects of intellectual and physical access. He will oversee closer integration of collection-related programs among the various HCL units including acquisitions, cataloging, access services, interlibrary lending and borrowing; and a range of collection-management programs, including conservation and preservation and the increasing use of the Harvard Depository.

He will also be responsible for defining key strategies for acquiring or accessing electronic resources and establishing parameters assuring sustained access to digital collections; for coordinating the creation, implementation, and assessment of digital library projects and programs; and for general oversight of those programs in which HCL collections are used for collaborative initiatives or commercial ventures. As a member of the University Library Council, he will participate in that group's discussions and deliberations.

Nancy M. Cline, Roy E. Larsen Librarian of Harvard College, said in announcing this appointment, "It is a great pleasure to welcome Jeffrey Horrell to his new position in the Harvard College Library. Jeff has an excellent understanding of the relationships that need to flourish between our librarians and the many teaching and research programs across the University.

"Jeff brings to his new position a fine understanding of Harvard, a deep appreciation for the diverse needs of the many academic programs in the University, and respect for those whose work depends upon our collections and related services. I am confident that Jeff's enthusiasm and experience will prove to be valuable in addressing the many challenging collections issues that we must address in the next several years."

Horrell said, "I am delighted and honored to have a role in shaping and supporting the extraordinary collections which make the Harvard College Library. Harvard is fortunate to have such strong collections matched with dedicated staff responsible for building, preserving, and providing access to them."

Before coming to Harvard, Horrell served as assistant university librarian for personnel, budget, and planning at Syracuse University and librarian of the Sherman Art Library at Dartmouth College.

Currently serving as co-Chair of the Friends of the Harvard College Library, Horrell is well-situated to appreciate the diverse needs of faculty, staff, and students, as well as the broader population of alumni and others interested in the Harvard libraries. A scholar himself, his book Seneca Ray Stoddard and the Adirondacks: Changing Perceptions of Wilderness is forthcoming from Syracuse University Press in fall 1998. Horrell received his B.A. in philosophy from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, an A.M. in the history of art and an A.M. in library science from the University of Michigan/Ann Arbor, and his M.Phil. and Ph.D. in humanities (History of Photography) from Syracuse University.
