In his new position, Cleveland oversees institutional policies and support for graduate medical education in collaboration with the hospital department chiefs and training program directors. Economist Kornai wins new Hungarian prize János Kornai, Allie S. Freed Professor of Economics, was honored as one of the first 17 recipients of a new prize recently established by the Hungarian Parliament, "for advancing the repute of the Hungarians." The prize was presented by the Prime Minister in the presence of the President of the Republic and the leaders of the parliamentary parties. Kornai's citation honored him, in part, because "his exceptional ability to create concepts combines with a descriptive thoroughness, and his professional reserve with the circumspection of an invariably principled scholar. . . . He seeks to inject universal science into the scientific culture of this country."
Everett Conducts on Grammy-Nominated CD Bands Director Thomas G. Everett conducts several selections on The Brass Orchestra, a new Grammy Award-nominated compact disc from Verve Records featuring the music of Robin Eubanks, Slide Hampton, and J.J. Johnson. The CD was nominated in two categories: Best Large Jazz Ensemble and Best New Jazz Composition (Johnson's Canon for Bela, conducted by Everett). Johnson visited Harvard in 1996 for a Master Jazz Residency and Retrospective Concert, sponsored by the Harvard Jazz Band and the Office for the Arts. The success of the new brass arrangements made for this occasion partly inspired him to complete a full CD of brass music, which Verve recorded in September of that year. Everett and Hampton shared the conducting honors.
