Focus on Environmental Health & Safety
Mission: q Maintain and promote a safe and healthful environment for the University community. q In collaboration with students, faculty, and staff, ensure compliance with environmental and occupational safety regulations and standards. Leadership: q Sally Zeckhauser, Vice President for Administration q Tom Vautin, Associate Vice President for Facilities and Environmental Service q Joe Griffin, Director of Environmental Health and Safety q Oversight by three faculty/staff committees from the schools and central administration: ß EH&S Policy Committee ß EH&S Operations Committee ß Radiation Safety Committee Scope: q Provide technical, regulatory, education, and related management services to the University community in the areas of biosafety, environmental management, food sanitation, industrial hygiene, pest control and entomology, radiation and general safety. q Monitor and assist in compliance with regulations promulgated by at least 9 federal, 23 state, and 8 municipal agencies. Major Accomplishments: q Initiated nationwide effort to urge reform of burdensome Nuclear Regulatory Commission rules governing laboratory research. q Joseph Ring of EH&S has been appointed chairman of the Massachusetts Low Level Radioactive Waste Management Board, which oversees the disposal of radioisotopes used in academic and medical research. Did You Know That: q EH&S conducts fire drills every fall for 17,000 student residents in all 85 houses and dormitories. q Almost 1,300 people have taken interactive training on the EH&S Home Page at www.uos.harvard.edu/ehs/. The site provides training in hazardous waste and other topics. q The EH&S pest control office has captured many wild animals or escaped pets on Harvard property including: opossums, skunks, raccoons, tarantulas, boa constrictors, prairie dogs, and a whipscorpion, the largest arthropod in North America.
