Economist Kornai wins new Hungarian prize

Janos Kornai, Allie S. Freed Professor of Economics, is among the first 17 recipients of a new prize for "advancing the repute of the Hungarians," established by the Hungarian Parliament. Kornai is a research economist and a Hungarian native.

The prize was conferred on Kornai by the prime minister in the presence of the president of the republic and the leaders of all parliamentary parties.

Cantley wins award for work on lipids

Lewis Cantley, professor of cell biology and of medicine, is the recipient of the 1998 Avanti Award of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). The award will be presented at the Society's upcoming meeting, to be held this May in Washington, D.C. Cantley will give a talk at the meeting.

Cantley is also chief of the Division of Signal Transduction at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The award recognizes outstanding research contributions in the area of lipids.

The ASBMB has more than 10,000 members and publishes the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Composer Martino's solo piano works now on CD

The complete solo piano works of Music Professor Emeritus Donald Martino have been recorded on 2 CDs by pianist Eliza Garth. The new issue contains some of Martino's latest works for solo piano, "Twelve Preludes" and his earlier works, "Piano Fantasy" and "Impromptu for Roger." Garth's earlier CD contains Martino's "Pianississimo, Fantasies and Impromptus" and "Suite in Old Form." The CDs are on the Centaur label.

Martino is a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer whose work reflects an unusual combination of influences: Tin Pan Alley as well as classical.
