New Appointments to Endowed Professorships Named
Several members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences were recently appointed to existing endowed professorships. The Governing Boards approved the appointments this summer and fall. * Alastair Cameron has been named the Donald H. Menzel Professor of Astrophysics. The chair was previously held by David Layzer, now the Donald H. Menzel Professor of Astrophysics Emeritus. It was established through gifts from Professor Menzel -- who taught astronomy at Harvard from 1932 to 1971 -- and his wife, Florence Kraeger Menzel, and many friends and associates. * Richard Caves has become the Nathaniel Ropes Professor of Political Economy. He succeeds Lawrence Summers, who assumed the position in 1987 and is currently with the Clinton Administration. This chair was established in 1909 through the bequests of Mary P. Ropes and her sister, Eliza O. Ropes. * Alfred Guzzetti has been appointed the Osgood Hooker Professor of Visual Arts. The chair was previously held by Louis Bakanowsky, who is the Osgood Hooker Professor of Visual Arts Emeritus. The professorship was established in 1970 in the Department of Visual and Environmental Studies, with funds from the Osgood Hooker Bequest. * Christopher Jones has become the George Martin Lane Professor of The Classics. Named for Professor Lane, who taught Latin at Harvard from 1851 to 1894, the chair was created through gifts of his daughter-in-law, Emma Gildersleeve Lane, and her daughter, Katherine Weems. * Mark Kishlansky has been named the Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of History. The title had been held by Richard Pipes, now the Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of History Emeritus. The endowed chair bears the name of its donor, who graduated from Harvard College in 1925. * Eric Maskin has been appointed the Louis Berkman Professor of Economics, a chair established in 1981 through a gift from Marshall Berkman '58, MBA '60, JD '63, and his brother-in-law, Robert Paul JD '62 and MBA '64. The chair is named in honor of Marshall Berkman's father. * Elaine Scarry has become the Walter M. Cabot Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value. She succeeds Stanley Cavell, now the Walter M. Cabot Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value Emeritus. The chair was established in 1963 through a bequest of Walter Mason Cabot, Class of 1894. * Kenneth Shepsle has been named the George D. Markham Professor of Government, a chair previously held by the late H. Douglas Price. It was created in 1974 through the bequest of Mrs. George D. Markham and the gift of Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr., Class of 1900. * Shing-Tung Yau has been appointed a Higgins Professor of Mathematics, a chair previously held by David Mumford, now a Higgins Professor of Mathematics Emeritus. The Higgins Professorships were established in 1948 through a bequest of Eugene Higgins.
