Newhouse Named Vice-Chair of Medicare Commission

Joseph P. Newhouse, John D. MacArthur Professor of Health Policy and Management, has been named vice-chair of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. The Commission will advise Congress on Medicare reimbursements to hospitals, and additional payments to teaching hospitals, nursing homes, HMOs, and physicians as well as monitor beneficiary access to Medicare.

Divinity SchoolÕs Williams Receives Honors

George Huntston Williams, Hollis Professor of Divinity Emeritus, received an honorary degree last month from the Protestant Theological Seminary of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, presented by the deputy bishop of the Unitarian Church in Romania.

The Polish government also conferred on him an Officer Cross of the Order of Merit.

Electronic Teaching Center Coordinator Speaks at Conference

Cheryl LaGuardia, coordinator of the Electronic Teaching Center in the College Library, presented a paper titled "The Electronic Library Classroom" during the panel, "Librarians: 2001 and Beyond" at the Eighth National Association of College and Research Libraries Conference in Nashville, Tenn.

Peggy Charren Appointed to Presidential Advisory Committee

Longtime children's television advocate Peggy Charren, a visiting scholar at the Graduate School of Education, has been appointed to a new television watchdog committee being overseen by Vice President Al Gore. The 21-member Advisory Committee on Public Interest Obligations of Digital Television Broadcasters will be submitting recommendations by next June about what duties TV stations will have to the public once they switch to digital technology.

Donahue To Be Director of Law School's Career Services

Sarah "Sally" Donahue will succeed June Thompson, director of the Law School's Career Services office who plans to retire in December. Donahue has served as director of financial aid at the Law School for the past 10 years, and, before that, as an admissions and financial aid officer at Harvard/Radcliffe.
