During the week of Oct. 28 through Nov. 3, several events surrounding the visit of Chinese President Jiang Zemin will be occurring at Harvard. These events include but are not limited to the following:

Historical Context of President Jiang Zemin's visit to Harvard by Professors Peter Bol (chair, East Asian Languages and Civilization), William Kirby (chair, History Department), and Robert Ross (Professor Political Sciences, Boston College; FCEAR associate)

A Speech by the President of the People's Republic of China, Jiang Zemin at Sanders Theatre

Wang Juntao (Ph.D. student, Columbia), Lobsang Sangay (graduate student, Law School), and another speaker, perhaps from Taiwan, to be determined, and Ezra Vogel. Moderated by William Kirby.

Press Conference

Wednesday, Oct. 29 3:30pm

Location: Wiener Auditorium, Taubman Building, Kennedy School

A press conference will be held with speakers from the member organizations, including Tashi Rabgey, Coalition spokesperson, and Shen Tong, Tiananmen dissident.

48-Hour Fast

Friday, Oct. 31

9 a.m. through Sunday, Nov. 2, at 9 a.m.

Location: Swedenborg Chapel, corner of Quincy and Kirkland streets

A 48-hour fast will be sponsored by the Tibetan Association of Boston. There will be a prayer for freedom and a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. on Friday. Contact Ngawang Jorden, 547-5481, jorden@fas.harvard.edu.

Film

Friday, Oct. 31 7 p.m.

Location: Harvard-Yenching Library, 2 Divinity Ave.

A screening will be held of a documentary about the events at Tiananmen Square, The Gate of Heavenly Peace. Contact Jian-Li Yang, 234-8991, yang4@fas.harvard.edu.

Rally

Saturday, Nov. 1

8 a.m.-1 p.m.

Location: Kirkland and Oxford streets

Under the theme "No One is Safe Under Jiang Zemin's Dynasty," a rally will be held to protest Jiang Zemin's speech at Sanders Theatre, Memorial Hall. Speakers will include Chinese dissidents Harry Wu and Shen Tong, representative of the Tibetan government-in-exile Dawa Tsering, and 10 Buddhist monks from India, as well as Harvard students.
