'An Evening with Champions' To Take the Ice

When Paul Wylie steps onto the ice at Bright Hockey Center next Friday, he will open the 28th chapter of "An Evening with Champions," a Jimmy Fund benefit and Boston tradition organized by Eliot House to help fight children's cancer.

Wylie, the 1992 Olympic silver medalist and a 1991 Harvard College graduate, will host the show for the fifth time in six years and will be joined by an impressive slate of amateur and professional talent. The event runs Oct. 24-26.

"We're especially excited because Oksana Baiul, the 1994 Olympic gold medalist, will skate in the Saturday evening performance," said Kristin Gilliss '99, one of the organizers.

"An Evening with Champions" will also feature jumping sensation Ilia Kulik of Russia (1996 World silver medalist), five-time European champion Surya Bonaly of France, pairs skaters Elena Bechke and Denis Petrov (1992 Olympic silver medalists), and the extraordinary U.S. dance team of Renee Roca and Gorsha Sur.

Over the past 27 years, many outstanding athletes have donated their time and energy to help the show raise more than $1.7 million for the Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The Jimmy Fund celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

This year's performances will be Friday, Oct. 24, at 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. at Bright Hockey Center. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children, senior citizens, and undergraduates
