Seminar on Hiring Consultants Offered
The Office of the General Counsel will offer a seminar on "Working with Consultants" on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Faculty Club. Designed for Harvard managers and administrators who need to use the services of consultants and independent contractors, this program is intended to be broad in scope and relevant to a wide variety of consulting specialties. It will acquaint clients with basic principles of contract law, present a Model Consulting Agreement, and cover the basic building blocks of successful relations with consultants, including such frequent questions as: * When is it necessary to have a written agreement? * How do I guard against incomplete or deficient work? * How do I protect Harvard's interest in intellectual property created by a consultant? * Under what circumstances can Harvard terminate the relationship? * What sort of insurance and indemnification arrangements are appropriate? * How should the consultant be treated for tax purposes? The seminar will be presented by University Attorneys Frank Connors, Mary T. Feeney, Diane E. Lopez, and Gregory L. Poppe. A continental breakfast will be available at 8:30 a.m. The seminar will be held from 9 until noon. There is no cost, but all attendees must register by Oct. 15, as seating is limited.
