Commons Now More Comfortable and Lively

In addition to a brand-new menu, Loker Commons this fall offers couches, a pool table, and other changes designed to make the gathering spot more comfortable and lively for students and other members of the Harvard community.

The changes stem from a reevaluation of Loker last spring, according to Eric Engel, director of the Memorial Hall/Lowell Hall Complex. The assessment, led by Dean of Students Archie C. Epps, included extensive discussions among students and College and Dining Services administrators. An undergraduate survey provided opinions on Loker's environment, programming, and food.

The Commons now sports a pool table and a living room niche with couches and chairs. Channel surfing is now possible in the television room near the entrance; the room also contains campus publications and a book swap that is always looking for fresh material.

The lighting at Loker has been adjusted to create a warmer atmosphere. The L.E.D. frieze, which runs the length of the Commons, is also being updated to show highlights from the new College Calendar (see related story). The larger L.E.D. board will continue to serve its primarily aesthetic role as the electronic counterpart to Memorial Hall's stained glass windows.

Loker's new audio system should hold up to the renowned acoustical properties of Sanders Theatre above, or at least make it easier to have parties and dances.

"We expect that the sound system, coupled with the elimination of user fees for these events, will bring more activity to Loker on the weekends," Engel said.

Other new programming efforts in Loker include an open "mic" for announcements or any impromptu use, a "create your own study break," which will encourage students to D.J. their own study breaks, and a Wednesday afternoon staff talent series in the Coffeehouse.

"Our goal is to have Loker busy all the time with a wide spectrum of events," said Raymond Traietti, of the Memorial Hall/Lowell Hall Complex, who will program activities in Loker this fall.

The Commons is open Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Food service hours (excluding the coffeehouse) are Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Anyone with questions about Loker Commons should call Memorial Hall at 496-4595.
