Burriss Young, Associate Dean of Freshmen, Honored
Now the rest of the country can know what Harvard College students have known for years: Associate Dean of Freshmen W.C. Burriss Young is one of the nation's "Outstanding Freshman Advocates." Young received the honor earlier this year from the National Resource Center for the Freshman Year Experience and Students in Transition. Over the past 35 years, Young -- a 1955 graduate of the College -- has advised more than 15,000 students in his positions as resident proctor, senior adviser, assistant dean, and associate dean of freshmen. He has also counseled many faculty and staff members who work with first-year students. Dean of Freshmen Elizabeth Studley Nathans, in her nomination letter, praised Young's compassion, imagination, and knowledge of the community. "Few of us have been privileged to work and to learn from individuals of Dean Young's unwavering dedication," she wrote. "He has modeled for a lifetime the best in personal and institutional loyalty and in student advocacy that colleges and universities have to offer."
