Honorary Degrees Go to Faculty Members 'Tis the season for the awarding of honorary degrees to members of the faculty. Dean of the Division of Continuing Education Michael Shinagel will receive an honorary doctorate this week from the International University of Ecuador. Development psychologist and Professor of Education Howard Gardner received an honorary doctorate earlier this month from the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. The Rev. Peter J. Gomes, Minister in the Memorial Church and Plummer Professor of Christian Morals, received an honorary doctorate this month from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He also gave the commencement address there. I. Bernard Cohen, Victor S. Thomas Professor of the History of Science Emeritus, was awarded an honorary doctorate from George Washington University. Tribute to Singer Fitzgerald Includes Harvard Jazz Band Fresh from celebrating its own 25th anniversary last month, the Harvard Jazz Band took part in a birthday salute to Ella Fitzgerald, DMU '90, the late great First Lady of Song, on April 26 in the Rubloff Auditorium at the Art Institute of Chicago. Under the baton of Bands Director Thomas G. Everett, the ensemble offered selections from Gerald Marks, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, and Wardell Gray. Jazz Band vocalist Jessica Tardy '99 joined in for two numbers and narrated Ellington's Portrait of Ella Fitzgerald. Pianist Tommy Flanagan, one of Fitzgerald's longtime accompanists, also performed with the group. Twain, Beethoven Topics of 55th Reunion Panels Several faculty members will take part in the 55th Reunion Class activities as speakers on panels. On Tuesday, June 3, Richard Marius, senior lecturer on English, will speak on Mark Twain at 2 p.m. in Lowell Hall. At 2:45 p.m., Thomas Kelly, professor of music, will speak about the premiere performance -- in Vienna in 1824 -- of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. On Wednesday, June 4, Brendan Maher, Edward C. Henderson Professor of the Psychology of Personality, will speak on "Whatever Happened to Responsibility?" at 9 a.m. at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel. Following that, at 10 a.m., former Nieman Fellows Tom Winship '42, Roger Angell '42, and John Robbins '42, along with Bill Kovach, curator of the Nieman Foundation, will speak on a panel about journalism under fire.
