Chairs Focus on Environment
A story in the May 1 edition of the Gazette stated that the Gilbert Butler Professorship of Environmental Studies was the first at Harvard to focus exclusively on environmental issues. The article should have stated that the Butler chair was the first of its kind to be established in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Other endowed chairs at the University focusing on the environment include those held by Richard H. K. Vietor of the Graduate School of Business Administration and John P. Holdren of the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Vietor is the Senator John Heinz Professor of Environmental Management at the Business School, where he teaches courses on the regulation of business and international political economy. His work on environmental management includes case studies in international energy issues and the regulation of natural gas, nuclear power, air polution, and hazardous wastes. Holdren is the Teresa and John Heinz Professor of Environmental Policy at the Kennedy School. He is affiliated with the School's Center for Science and International Affairs (CSIA) and directs the CSIA's Program in Science, Technology, and Public Policy. He has written extensively on environmental issues, including global environmental problems, energy and resource options in industrial and developing countries, and the consequences of population growth.
