Three to be Teaching Fellows in England

Three seniors have been selected to represent the University and the United States as teaching fellows at preparatory schools, known as public schools, in England.

Charles M. Stang of Kirkland House, recipient of the Eton Annenberg Fellowship; Herman A. Sanchez of Cabot House, recipient of the Shrewsbury Fellowship; and Courtney Kress of Mather House, recipient of the Bryanston Fellowship, will spend a year living and working at these historic public schools.

As well as teaching and tutoring, each fellow will be encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, such as coaching a sport or assisting in play production.

Most important is their role as an American ambassador, and as a representative and interpreter of American culture and civilization.

The fellowships began in 1978 out of a friendship between the Rev. Professor Peter J. Gomes and then-Headmaster of Shrewsbury, Eric Anderson. Anderson, now Rector of Lincoln College, Oxford, went on to head Eton -- and to establish a fellowship there -- and one of his colleagues founded a similar fellowship at Bryanston. Gomes is the American Trustee of these fellowships.

Candidates were evaluated on their personal statements, letters of reference, and an interview. "There was a very impressive pool of nominations from the House Senior Tutors and Career Services this year," said Gomes. "It was the best pool for quality in years."

Kress, who is from Pittsburgh, Pa., has been to England before, having spent a year living in London. Both Sanchez, from LaVerne, Calif., and Stang, from Independence, Mo., have never left the U.S., so living abroad will be a unique experience. "I am really looking forward to it," said Stang. "I'm a bit nervous, never having left the country before, and I'm sure there will be some acclimation, but it is a great opportunity."
