Bessie Jones, Former Observatory Editor, Dies
Bessie Jones, a former editor in the editorial and publications division of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, died April 17. She was 98. Widow of Howard Mumford Jones, she was born Nov. 11, 1898, in Atlanta, Ga., and counted among her accomplishments the production (with Lyle Gifford Boyd) of a history of the Harvard College Observatory, and the establishment of Cambridge's Window Shop, a nonprofit enterprise to aid European refugees. Donations can be made in Jones's memory to the Howard Mumford Jones Professorship in the Humanities and sent to: The Recording Secretary's Office, Harvard University, 124 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, MA 02138. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 2:30 p.m. at 24 Francis Ave., Cambridge.
