Report on final clubs issued by Dean of Students Epps

Dean of Students Archie C. Epps has issued a report on final clubs that aims to warn students who may be considering joining or visiting the all-male clubs. Final clubs became independent of Harvard in 1984.

"During the past several years we have seen a disturbing increase in the reports of inappropriate behavior occurring at various final clubs," it says. The College has tried to address the problems "with mixed results."

Epps' report describes some of the more serious incidents that allegedly took place in the final clubs during 1996, many of them involving alcohol abuse.

"These incidents present a disturbing pattern of conduct that puts participating students at substantial physical and legal risk," according to the report.

"Through their policies and actions, the clubs have shown little respect for decency and for the principles of the College, including the equal rights of women," the report states.

"Although we have no control over the activities of the clubs, we continue to urge them to elect women members and to take the steps necessary to provide a safe and respectful environment for all students."
