Maybury-Lewis wins Brazil's Grand Cross David Maybury-Lewis, professor of anthropology, was recently awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Scientific Merit as a tribute from the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The award is Brazil's highest academic distinction and was given in recognition of Maybury-Lewis' outstanding contributions to the development of Brazilian social science. Maybury-Lewis' work has focused on the indigenous peoples of the Americas, particularly Brazil. He has chronicled their lives and supported their struggles especially through Cultural Survival Inc., an organization that he and his wife, Pia, founded and which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with a gala ball at the Charles Hotel on March 15. Music Chair Shelemay to head ethnomusicology society Kay Kaufman Shelemay, chair of the Music Department, has been voted president-elect of the Society for Ethnomusicology. Her two-year term as president will begin in November. Phillips Brooks House elects new officers Roy Bahat '98 is the newly elected president of the Phillips Brooks House Association, the largest public service organization for undergraduates. The vice president is Michael Ma '98, the treasurer is Judy Hung '99, and the secretary is Amanda Spector '98. PBHA offers 49 social service and social action programs involving more than 1,500 students. They include tutoring for adults and children, legal and environmental advocacy, conflict resolution instruction, and summer day camps. Development officers win award Jennifer Beynart, major gifts officer, University Development Office (UDO); Barb La Casce, staff assistant, Harvard College Fund; and Patty Kelleher and Michael Emery, development associates for research (UDO), have been awarded the Harvard College Fund's Marion Anderson Award. Established by legendary Fund Director David McCord in memory of Anderson, who served as a staff assistant in the Fund for 30 years, the award recognizes members of the Harvard College Fund and University Development Office "who best demonstrate efficiency, courtesy, and imagination" in their work.
