New senior VP for HMS-Beth Israel Deaconess Mount Auburn institute Barry I. Eisenstein, M.D., has been appointed senior vice president for science and technology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard Medical School Beth Israel Deaconess Mount Auburn Institute for Education and Research. The Institute is the first medical education and research program in which a medical school and a teaching hospital have entered into a joint venture to reshape the way medical students are trained and the manner in which research is supported and funded. Eisenstein was vice president of Infectious Disease and Clinical Development at Lilly Research Laboratories in Indiana and sits on the advisory council of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Biologist McHugh joins MCZ Damhnait McHugh has joined the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. She is an assistant professor of biology and assistant curator in invertebrate biology in the Museum of Comparative Zoology. Her research focuses on the ecology and evolution of marine invertebrate life histories. McHugh comes from Cornell University, where she held a National Science Foundation/Sloan postdoctoral fellowship in molecular evolution. Fromm Music Foundation announces 1996 commissions Harvard's Fromm Music Foundation has announced the recipients of the 1996 Fromm commissions. The 11 composers, chosen from over 120 applicants, are: Elizabeth Brown (New York, N.Y.); Gerard Brophy (Montpelier, Australia); Sebastian Currier (New York, N.Y.); John Eaton (Chicago, Ill.); Michael Gandolfi (Cambridge, Mass.); Zhi Jian-er (Shanghai, China); Hyo-Shin Na (San Francisco, Calif.); Andrew Rindfleisch (a student in Harvard's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences); Morris Rosenzweig (Salt Lake City, Utah); Pieter A. Snapper (Oberlin, Ohio); and Sean Varah (New Haven, Conn.). Applicants for commissions are reviewed on an annual basis. The annual deadline for proposals is June 1.
