Questions and Answers About the Community Gifts Campaign

By Ken Gewertz

Gazette Staff

The Community Gifts through Harvard Campaign is designed to make it simple and convenient for Harvard employees to contribute to the charity of their choice. However, as often happens, providing more choices and greater flexibility can sometimes increase confusion. So, to help eliminate some of that confusion and to encourage greater participation in the Campaign, we are providing the following information in question and answer format. We hope that you will find answers to your questions.

Why does the campaign feature United Way?

Two-thirds of the funds donated through our campaign have traditionally gone to the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, the largest umbrella agency in our area. For the convenience of our donors and to expedite the processing time, we include literature on this organization and a separate pledge card.

I think I might like to give to a charity that's not a United Way affiliate. Do you have a list of these?

No. Because of the wide range of interests in our community, it would be impossible to supply a complete list. There are over 1,000 charities in the Community Gifts through Harvard database and the

staff is equipped to make suggestions and referrals to sources of

information that will help you make your decisions.

Do I have to give to an organization in this area? Can I give to a charity or to the United Way in my hometown?

Yes. Using the green cards, you may select charities anywhere in the world. Remember to use a separate green card for each charity

you select.

May I give to my church or alumni association?

Yes, they are in fact nonprofit organizations.

Can I use the campaign to support volunteer efforts of

students and staff?

Yes. If the volunteer group is not a recognized charity, it is best to

make your pledge or check payable to the organization under which the group is organized and to designate your contribution to the specific effort you wish to support. For example, you might direct your contribution to Phillips Brooks House, but designate it for the Homeless Committee.

How can I be sure that my gift will not be used for

administrative costs?

The costs associated with the management of the Harvard campaign are a gift from the University; therefore, all monies contributed are forwarded to the designated charities. However, it is suggested that donors research the charities in which they have an interest before making their contributions. This information should be readily available at all charitable organizations.

How does the payroll deduction plan work?

Each pay period, monies pledged are deducted from your check. The Payroll Office sends a report of these deductions to the Community Gifts through Harvard office each month. Gifts are grouped by charities and University checks are issued and sent to each charity with a list of donors and the amount paid. United Way checks are sent monthly. Checks to other charities are sent after every calendar quarter.

May I use my gift for tax purposes?

Using IRS guidelines, gifts are tax deductible and donors may obtain

written acknowledgment from the donee organization. The advantage of pledging gifts through payroll deduction is that you can easily create a planned giving system for next year.
