Two books by Daniel Bell, Henry Ford II Professor of Social Sciences Emeritus, were republished this fall. Marxian Socialism in the United States, first published in 1952 and again in 1967, has a 1996 edition. TheCultural Contradictions of Capitalism, named by the Times Literary Supplement as one of the 100 Most Influential Books of the Past Half Century, is also being reissued. Milton Weinstein, Henry J. Kaiser Professor of Health Policy and Management at the School of Public Health, received the award for career achievement in the field of medical decision making from the Society of Medical Decision Making at its October annual meeting in Toronto. The 20-year-old society established the award one year ago to recognize career achievements in this relatively young field. Arthur Loeb, senior lecturer and honorary associate in visual and environmental studies, delivered a plenary address, A Design Science/Visual Mathematics Studio at Harvard-Radcliffe, at an International Symposium on Mathematics and Art in Suzdal, Russia. Loeb is also a faculty member at the Graduate School of Education. Charles V. Willie, professor of education and urban studies at the Graduate School of Education, assumed the office of vice president of the American Sociological Association (ASA) at their 1996 meeting in New York City. The Association of Black Sociologists, which met prior to the ASA, presented Willie with its Distinguished Career Award for his contributions to the discipline. This past summer Willie was commencement speaker for the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston and was given an honorary Doctor of Engineering Technology degree. Richard Levins, John Rock Professor of Population Sciences at the School of Public Health, was honored at the eighth conference of the Alexander Humboldt Institute for Fundamental Research in Tropical Agriculture of the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture. His efforts were cited "during 30 years transmitting his profound understanding of ecology which has contributed to laying the foundations of sustainability in our country."
