Vorenberg Classroom Named for Former Dean

The Law School has established the Vorenberg Classroom in honor of its former Dean, James Vorenberg. The Vorenberg Classroom was formerly known as Langdell North.

Vorenberg, currently the Roscoe Pound Professor of Law, was the ninth Dean of Harvard Law School, serving from 1981 to 1989. Funds for the renovation of the classroom were gifts from many members of Vorenberg's Harvard Law School Class, the Class of '51, who are celebrating their 45th reunion this weekend. The special fundraising event was organized by Howard Heffron, Jerome Facher, and Melvin Dow -- all classmates and longtime friends of Vorenberg.

The Vorenberg Classroom is currently undergoing major repairs as part of the $33 million renovation of Langdell Hall and will be available for use when the building reopens in fall 1997.

"Jim Vorenberg is one of the most admired and respected teachers at the Harvard Law School -- the object of much affection among his students," said Dean Robert Clark. "The Vorenberg Classroom and the Langdell Hall renovation are fruits of the successful Campaign for Harvard Law School, which was the result of a process begun by Jim Vorenberg. Harvard Law School is grateful to Jim for his leadership and dedication, and to his classmates and friends for their great generosity."

In expressing his pleasure at the renaming of the room where he has worked both as a student and a professor, Vorenberg said "I've had some of my best and worst moments there. I am very grateful to my classmates for what they have done for the School and for me. Of course, when I really needed a classroom of my own was when students were occupying my office."

Vorenberg's interest is in the area of criminal justice. He teaches Criminal Law, Legal Ethics, and Criminal Justice Administration.

In addition to serving as Dean, and teaching at Harvard Law School for 35 years, Vorenberg has been director of the President's Crime Commission, associate Watergate prosecutor, and chairman of the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission.

He received his A.B. from Harvard College in 1948 and his LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1951.
