B. Leonard Holman, Philip H. Cook Professor of Radiology at the Medical School and chairman of the Radiology Department at Brigham and Women's Hospital, has recently been elected by the membership of the Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD) to serve as a counselor and therefore a member of that organization's executive committee. SCARD's purpose is to provide a forum to promote research and training missions of academic radiology departments.

Holman also will serve as secretary-treasurer of the recently established Academy of Radiology Research, an organization of major radiologic societies and specialty radiologic societies founded to help create an Institute of Biomedical Imaging at the National Institutes of Health and to advise the NIH on matters related to radiologic medical imaging.

The Boston Playwrights' Theatre next month mounts six performances of Love in the Gulf, two related one-act plays by Harvard Extension School teacher Joyce Van Dyke. The first play (The Parents) explores the widening gulf between a married couple, and between the couple and their children. Fifteen years later, the second play (The Children) focuses on the three adult children during a vacation on a Mediterranean island. Presented under the auspices of BPT Artistic Director Derek Walcott, the production is directed by Kate Snodgrass.

Performances will take place at the BPT (949 Commonwealth Ave.) on Nov. 1-3 and 8-10 (Fridays and Saturdays at 8; Sundays at 2). Admission is $10 (general), $5 (senior citizens and students with ID). Seating is limited. For details and reservations, call 353-5443.

Thomas Roberts, a fourth-year Medical School student, recently won a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to study public health in Africa. The scholarship provides full funding to live and study at the University of Cape Town in South Africa for one year following graduation from the Medical School in 1997. In addition to studying public health, Roberts will also volunteer in rural outreach clinics of South Africa under the sponsorship of the University of
Cape Town Medical School. He will travel throughout Africa speaking at Rotary clubs and civic organizations as an ambassador of goodwill.
