Cogan Receives Law School Association Award for 1996

John F. Cogan Jr., senior partner, former managing partner, and currently chairman of the Boston law firm, Hale and Dorr, and chairman of the successfully completed $175 million Campaign for Harvard Law School, is the 1996 recipient of the Harvard Law School Association Award.

The HLSA award, the highest honor given by the Association, recognizes sustained or extraordinary service to the legal profession and Harvard Law School, as well as contributions to the public welfare that exemplify the values of the Law School.

The award reads: "Consummate corporate lawyer, visionary mutual fund president, dedicated patron of the arts, and indefatigable Chairman of the Campaign for Harvard Law School, your individual generosity, inspired leadership, and devoted service to the Law School assure that countless future generations will share the benefits of your manifold good deeds."

Dean Robert Clark and Harvard Law School Association President Charlotte Armstrong presented the award to Cogan during ceremonies yesterday at the Law School's Jarvis Field, near Harkness Commons.

Besides chairing the School's fundraising campaign, Cogan has served as chairman of the Harvard Law School Fund and Dean's Advisory Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Harvard University Resources Committee and of the Harvard College Fund.

Cogan is a member of Hale and Dorr's Corporate Department, its Investment Company and Advisory Practice Group, its International Practice Group, and an associate member of its Trusts and Estates Department. His area of practice is in the corporate, financial, and fiduciary fields.

Cogan is active in the financial services industry, serving as president and director of the Pioneer Group of mutual funds.

Involved in many community activities, Cogan is a trustee of the Boston Symphony, chairman and trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, an overseer of the Handel and Hayden Society, and a trustee of the Walker Home for Children. He has also served as a trustee of the Boston Ballet.
