Advisory Group Formed to Assist Medical Dean Search

President Neil L. Rudenstine has announced the formation of a faculty advisory group to assist him in the search for a new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Dean Daniel C. Tosteson recently announced that he will step down in June 1997, following 20 years of service.

The following members of the Faculty of Medicine, drawn from both the Medical School's Quadrangle-based departments and from a number of the Harvard-affiliated medical institutions, have agreed to serve on the advisory group: Norman Coleman (head of the Department of Radiation Therapy, Joint Center for Radiation Therapy); Joseph Coyle (professor of psychiatry, McLean Hospital); Patricia Donahoe (professor of surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital); Gerald Fischbach (head of the Department of Neurobiology, HMS); Robert Glickman (head of the Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Hospital); Peter Howley (head of the Department of Pathology, HMS); Marc Kirschner (head of the Department of Cell Biology, HMS); Philip Leder (head of the Department of Genetics, HMS); Barbara McNeil (professor of radiology and of health care policy, HMS); Robert Moellering (head of the Department of Medicine, New England Deaconess Hospital); Philip Pizzo (incoming physician-in-chief and chair of the Department of Medicine, Children's Hospital); Michael Rosenblatt (professor of molecular medicine, HMS); Christopher Walsh (professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology, HMS); Anne Young (professor of neurology, Massachusetts General Hospital); and Michael Zinner (head of the Department of Surgery, Brigham and Women's Hospital).

Rudenstine said he is also soliciting advice regarding the search from faculty, students, staff, alumni, and others in the Harvard medical community, as well as from the university and medical communities more broadly. Individuals who wish to offer their views -- on the future directions of Harvard medical education and research, on the most important qualities in a new Dean, and on possible candidates for the deanship -- should send confidential letters to President Neil L. Rudenstine, c/o Marc Goodheart, Special Assistant to the President, Harvard University, Massachusetts Hall, Cambridge, MA 02138.
