Moneo Wins Architecture's Pritzker Prize
José Rafael Moneo, professor of architecture at the Graduate School
of Design (GSD), was named the 1996 recipient of the prestigious Pritzker
Prize.
The $100,000 prize -- the largest in the field of architecture -- is awarded
by an international jury of experts. Moneo, who was chair of the GSD's Department
of Architecture from 1985 to 1990, is the designer of the Davis Museum and
Cultural Center at Wellesley College, the National Museum of Roman Arts
in Mérida, and many other buildings, including an airport, a railroad
station, and several other museums in Spain.
Moneo is currently working on projects all over the world, including the
design of a large wing for the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. The
project will provide two acres of gallery space, and construction is due
to begin early next year.
He will receive the Pritzker Prize at a ceremony in Los Angeles in June.
