Harvard Extension School To Offer Summer Courses

For many years, students have asked, "Do you offer Extension School courses in the summer?" In the past, the answer has always been "yes and no." Yes, we offer Summer School courses, but no, there is no summer term of the Extension School. But this year, in response to student requests, the answer is "yes and yes."

In addition to the 250 courses sponsored by the Harvard Summer School, the Division of Continuing Education will run a small pilot program of proseminars, seminars, and Certicate of Special Studies (CSS) courses sponsored by the Harvard Extension School. The new summer program is designed for Boston-area adults who are looking for reasonably priced professional courses offered in the evening.

The courses will run from June 24 to Aug. 16, meet two nights a week for two and one-half hours, and cost the same as 1995-96 Extension School courses. "We hope to reach new markets and provide better service to our current students," said Dean Mary Higgins. "Summer may be the best, or only, time for some people to pursue professional advancement. For example, high school teachers may now be able to complete a master's degree (A.L.M.), doing all of their work -- from introductory research methods proseminar to thesis -- over several summers."

This first summer, Extension will offer proseminars in the social sciences and humanities. Topics covered will include American literary realism; politics and society in 20th-century Western Europe; and principles of research design.

The Extension School also will offer three CSS courses: CSS-132 Business and International Affairs; CSS-205 Organizational Behavior; and CSS-405 Using Information for Competitive Advantage.

To request a brochure and registration form for the Extension School summer term, please call Planning and Special Projects Officer Wayne Ishikawa, 495-2478, or Dean Mary Higgins, 495-4867, e-mail ishikawa@hudce.harvard.edu, or visit the Extension School World Wide Web site on the Internet at http://dcewww.harvard.edu/ext/insummer. The registration deadline is June 5 and classes begin June 24.
