Women's Basketball Takes Ivy Title
Squash teams again take national titles
The women's basketball team defeated Brown (73-62) and Yale (55-52) this
past weekend to capture the Ivy League championship and qualify for the
NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament for the first time in the
school's history with the League's automatic bid. The Ivy title represents
Harvard's fourth in women's basketball and its first since 1990-91.
With an 85-78 win over Dartmouth in overtime on Tuesday, the Crimson improved
its record to 20-6 overall and 13-1 in league action. The Crimson owns a
new school record: a 13-game winning streak coming off its final regular-season
game.
Harvard will learn its first-round opponent in the NCAA tournament on Selection
Sunday, March 10. To learn the results, watch the selection show on cable
television's ESPN at 7:30 p.m.
Women in basketball are not the only athletes to excel this season.
The men's and women's squash teams are cleaning up.
The men's team captured its sixth consecutive National Nine-Man Team Championship
recently. The title is the Crimson's 29th overall. No team has won as many.
The Crimson also chalked up a 12-0 dual match record by blanking Amherst
9-0 in the final match of the regular season. The team also registered a
6-0 Ivy League mark and won the Ivy Championship.
The women's squash team captured its fifth straight national championship
by defeating Yale 8-1 to complete a 9-0 dual match record and a 5-0 Ivy
League mark, also good for the Ivy title.
The women's squash team has won nine national titles in the 13 years the
championship has been established.
Heach Coach Bill Doyle has now led the men's and women's teams to a national
championship in each of his four seasons.
